Updated May 2019: From Musicoguia Team we would like to congratulate Dr. Abdul Halim for receiving on December 2018 the recognition and admission into the Royal Order of the Crown of the Georgian Kingdom.

Dr. Abdul Halim was born in Thuckalay, Tamilnadu (India) in 1983. He studied a Bachelor of Music in Mridangam from Annamalai University. Then he studied a Master’s Degree in Music [Mridangam] from R.L.V College of Music and Fine Arts, Kerala. He additionally holds a Master of Philosophy [Ghatam research] with distinction from Tamil University, Tanjore. Dr. Abdul Halim received an honorary Doctorate from World Records University, London for his achievement in Ghatam.

Throughout his music career Dr. Abdul Halim has performed in many prestigious music concerts in India and abroad and with legends like Sri. Kadri Gopalnath, Sri. T.V. Gopala Krishnan, Sri. T.V. Sankaranarayanan, Sri. Neyveli Santhana Gopalan, Dr. N. Ramani, Pandit Anand Badamikar and others. He has received several awards like Kalaivalarmani [Tamilnadu government award], Nadalayamani, Best musician award, Swami Vivekanandha award etc. He went to Fiji Islands for a concert tour sponsored by ICCR.

Dr. Abdul Halim produced a music video named “The Beat World” and he has screened in several festivals as the Cyberhum Spring Into Summer International Film Festival (USA), the Free Spirit International Film festival (Himachal Pradesh) or the Kanyakumari International Film Festival among others. He also appeared in a satellite TV channel named ‘Moon TV” and produced a music video named “Zephyr Zone”. Recently Dr. Abdul Halim has produced a music album named Abdul Halim’s Taal which is released through USA based record label cdbaby.com. The American TV channel Drum Talk TV made an interview with Dr. Abdul Halim and from Musicoguia we have prepared an interview to know more about this artist.

INTERVIEW

1. When did you started to learn Indian music?

When I was 16 years old, I started learning Tabla from Mr. Ayyanparavilai Krishnan. Then I studied B.Music in Mridangam from Annamalai University, M.A Mridangam from Mahatma Gandhi University and M.phil from Tamil University. The research title of my M.phil is «Ghatam a research». I got Honorary Doctorate from World Records University for my World records in music instruments. I learned Ghatam from Ghatam legend V. Suresh and I learned Chenda and drum kit too.

2. How do you teach Indian music to your students?

I am teaching Ghatam, Mridangam, Udukku, Drum kit and Bucket drumming too. I teach South Indian percussion style in those instruments. I am working in Balakrishna matric Higher Secondary School as a Music Teacher and World Record trainer. My 170 students are World Record holders. I am an «A» grade Ghatam artist of All India Radio. I am giving special training to students to achieve in National level competitions.

3. Could you give any tips for beginners interested in learning Indian music?

I usually practice with my students so the students could learn fast. They will reach my speed and clarity as soon as possible. My tips for begginers is to practice 8 hours daily and listen all genres of music.

4. Could you tell us something about your new book?

I have written a book named «1000 Korvais for drummers and percussionists».
«Korvai» is one of the percussion composition of south Indian music. The Korvai has 2 parts called Poorvangam and Uthrangam. In my new book there are 1000 korvais. This book is useful for Drummers and Percussionists who are interested in playing the korvai. The korvai can be played in Drum kit and all percussion instruments.
