1. How and when did your interest in learning music and piano begins?
We had a piano where I grew up, so I started playing that at a very young age. Not more than a couple of years old. When I was around 7-8 years old my mother signed me up for piano lessons, and although I only attended classes for a few years, I have kept playing piano ever since. I worked with teachers in some periods but probably not more than 5 years in total. Besides that, I’m self-taught.
2. What advantages do you think that learning piano in your online classes have compared to the traditional way of conservatories or music schools?
I currently don’t have an online class on learning piano. I do have online courses focused on sheet music and recording, and I believe these courses are a great and inexpensive starting point for people who wants to start learning piano and making recordings. It is very beneficial to have a piano teacher, but it’s expensive for many and it can be huge step to take. So huge that many never get started. When using online classes in general it is fast and easy to get started. Personally, I use online courses all the time to gain knowledge on different areas.
3. Do you think that it has been crucial to have a strategy to create so many followers on social networks (Jacob’s Piano)? Any advice for beginners?
Yes, the strategy I initially worked with proved to be crucial. On a platform like YouTube which has so much content, my initial strategy was to create cover songs of popular music but with only few worldwide uploads to YouTube. The way to accomplish that was to be one of the first to create a cover when new movie soundtracks was released. I did that for Interstellar in 2014 and it was my first breakthrough on YouTube. After having had my breakthrough, I have changed my strategy a bit, because I don’t like working under that kind of pressure it is to be the first to upload something. Currently, my main focus is just to make sure that all content I make is of the highest possible quality. Even though I’m primarily focused on writing my own original melodies now, I still rely on cover songs, as that is simply the easiest way to make listeners find your music.
4. Do you see yourself performing piano concerts in the future around the world?
This is a hard question. It is both yes and no. When it comes to my dreams, it is wonderful to imagine myself on stage in front of huge audience getting moved by my music. On the other hand, I’m not very comfortable performing on a stage to be honest. I’m very happy the way my work life is and it would be a big change if I should start making concerts. It would require me to practice and work in a completely new way, and also give up some other things I have a great passion for – making online courses among others. I believe I will play more publicly in the future, but whether or not I’ll play actual concerts is simply not something I know at this point.

1. ¿Cómo y cuándo surge tu interés por aprender música y piano?
Teníamos un piano donde crecí, así que comencé a tocarlo a una edad muy temprana. No más de dos años. Cuando tenía alrededor de 7 u 8 años, mi madre me inscribió en clases de piano y, aunque solo asistí a clases durante unos años, he seguido tocando el piano desde entonces. Trabajé con profesores en algunos períodos, pero probablemente no más de 5 años en total. Además de eso, soy autodidacta.
2. ¿Qué ventajas crees que tiene aprender piano en tus clases online frente a la forma tradicional de los conservatorios o escuelas de música?

Tengo cursos online enfocados a partituras y grabación, y creo que estos cursos son un punto de partida excelente y económico para las personas que quieren comenzar a aprender piano y hacer grabaciones. Es muy beneficioso tener un profesor de piano, pero es costoso para muchos y puede ser un gran paso. Tan grande que muchos nunca comienzan. Al utilizar las clases online, en general, es rápido y fácil comenzar. Personalmente, utilizo cursos en línea todo el tiempo para adquirir conocimientos en diferentes áreas.
3. ¿Crees que ha sido crucial tener una estrategia para crear tantos seguidores en las redes sociales (Jacob’s Piano)? ¿Algún consejo para los principiantes?
Sí, la estrategia con la que trabajé inicialmente resultó ser crucial. En una plataforma como YouTube que tiene tanto contenido, mi estrategia inicial fue crear versiones de canciones de música popular pero con pocas subidas a YouTube en todo el mundo. La forma de lograrlo era ser uno de los primeros en crear una versión cuando se lanzaran nuevas bandas sonoras de películas. Lo hice para Interstellar en 2014 y fue mi primer avance en YouTube. Después de haber tenido mi gran avance, he cambiado un poco mi estrategia, porque no me gusta trabajar bajo ese tipo de presión que es ser el primero en subir algo. Me requeriría practicar y trabajar de una manera completamente nueva, y también renunciar a otras cosas que me apasionan mucho, como hacer cursos online, entre otras. Creo que en el futuro tocaré más en público, pero si tocaré o no en conciertos presenciales es simplemente algo que no sé en este momento.
